We know that tackling obesity can be a challenge, and we know that often you can't seem to stress strongly enough how much a person needs to take action because of the impact that excess weight is having or has the potential to have on their health. But did you know that a significant proportion of obese patients, actively avoid visiting their GP as much as possible because they feel like their doctor blames everything upon their weight and shames them without truly understanding how it is for them, or offering them any real help and advice?
Sharon Heaton Professional Services can help you to change that, by offering you insights into the world of living with morbid obesity, so that you can offer your patients true empathy and engage with them on a their level, and beyond there help you to inspire them to try something slightly a different. Sharon advocates an approach at looks at chronic overeating as a symptom of something more, and sets about finding ways to discover what lies behind those eating patterns, and ways to modify them so that they can remain well-managed long-term.

It may be that you're looking for a direction to point a patient in, especially if other interventions have not been successful, or accessing treatment is problematic (due to waiting times, availability of services, location etc). Whilst we accept self referrals, it's always beneficial to us if a person is referred by their GP who can provide a summary of the help and treatment a patient has already received, alongside details of any pre-existing conditions.
Alternatively you may be looking for help regarding a particular patient, so that you and your practice are better placed to help them. Even if conventional routes have failed, or a patient has reached the end of tier 3 and been told that there is no more help available to them unless they wish to consider bariatric surgery; we can provide advice regarding the next steps and what can still be done for the patient. When a patient wants to be helped, there is always potential for a successful outcome.

If you are looking to launch a weight management initiative, but don't wish to deliver this in-house, we can deliver a hosted programme for you, in conjunction with your practice. Programmes will usually be delivered online via zoom, but it may be possible for Sharon to host them in person in the East Lancashire/Manchester area. Please contact us to discuss your requirements in more detail.

We really appreciate that some GPs and medical professionals, want to learn more and really understand their patient's experiences, they want an opportunity to explore and understand the flaws in currently available treatments, and they want to be the best they can be for their patients. That's why we offer training sessions for GPs aimed at helping them to understand their obese patients better, why the treatments on offer often don't work, or the results don't last long-term, and ways in which they can help and as as a result build better relationships with their patients.
We also offer training around the lived experience of being morbidly obese, and the basics of why it's not as simple as "eat less and move more" for some people; aimed at giving all practice employees a better understanding and opportunity to develop better standards of care for their more significantly overweight patients.
Sharon herself has battled life-long to gain control of her relationship with food, at one point weighing almost 27st (170kg), but now weighing considerably less. After many years of yo-yo dieting, often losing 7st or more, only to regain it all plus more on top, Sharon tried every treatment she could find - slimming clubs, personal trainers, dieticians, group therapy, CBT, CAT, psychotherapy, she even partnered with an eating disorders specialist in the US in an attempt to try to find a lasting solution. Whilst some of the treatments were more effective than others, none provided a lasting solution. Sharon realised that the problem with the treatments on offer was that they all had a tendency to oversimplify the problem, and only focus on one or two aspects of what is a much more complex issue. Utilising her own background in psychology and counselling, combined with her experiences, participation is peer support networks, and an ongoing interest in obesity and weight management research, Sharon was finally able to gain a better understanding of the factors associated with morbid obesity which allowed to her help herself, and then go on to help others. Sharon is passionate about helping people to find ways to start addressing their relationship with food, and as well as her professional work, still participates in charity and peer support work, and takes an active interest in obesity and weight management research within the UK and further afield.
